In a powerful sign of how much the debate about gun violence in the United States has changed since the June 12 Orlando massacre, dozens of House Democrats occupied the House floor Wednesday for a sit-in that demanded the Republican-controlled chamber take up meaningful legislation to address the crisis.
Led by Congressman John Lewis, the Georgia Democrat who has embraced the gun-violence issue with the passion that he brought to his civil-rights activism of a half century ago, roughly 40 Democratic members sat down in front of Speaker Paul Ryan’s podium and demanded that the House skip its scheduled July 4 recess and instead consider gun-control proposals.
